Clement of Rome
c. AD 96 · 59 chapters
A letter from the church at Rome to the church at Corinth, where some younger men had pushed out the presbyters. It appeals for order and humility, and chapters 42 to 44 describe how the apostles appointed bishops and deacons and arranged for others to succeed them.
This translation was made in 1870 from a manuscript that had lost its ending. A fuller manuscript was published in 1875, so some closing chapters found in modern editions are missing here. The closing chapters here are numbered 64 and 65, as in modern editions; chapters 58 to 63 (including the long prayer) are not in this translation.
Translation by Alexander Roberts, James Donaldson and Frederick Crombie: The Ante-Nicene Christian Library, vol. 1: The Apostolic Fathers (Edinburgh: T. & T. Clark, 1870).
