About this icon
This 12th-century icon from Saint Catherine's Monastery on Mount Sinai illustrates The Ladder of Divine Ascent, the classic guide to the spiritual life written by St. John Climacus, abbot of Sinai. Monks climb a ladder toward Christ, who reaches down to receive the one who has reached the top rung, while demons drag the faltering off with hooks and arrows, angels encourage those still climbing, and a company of bishops, monks, and laypeople look on from below. Each rung stands for one of the thirty steps John Climacus described, from renouncing the world to the height of faith, hope, and love. Read aloud in Byzantine and Eastern Catholic churches during Great Lent, it remains one of the most enduring images of the ascetic life — honest about how easily we fall, and insistent that Christ himself is waiting at the top.
