About this poster
The Ladder of Divine Ascent, from Saint Catherine's Monastery on Mount Sinai (12th century), paired with the verse behind its image. In John 1:51 Jesus tells Nathanael, 'you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man' — recalling Jacob's dream of a ladder to heaven (Genesis 28:12) and naming himself as the place where earth meets heaven. St. John Climacus, abbot of Sinai, built a book of thirty steps on that image, and the icon shows monks climbing toward Christ while demons drag at the faltering and angels urge on those who persevere. The verse sits beneath the icon in a walnut-and-gold frame.
